As a child, and even as a teen, I never really understood what Mardi Gras was. All I knew was that it wasn't to be celebrated. I understood why I was told that, due to the obscene dressing and drinking at parades and parties that take place during the holiday.
But earlier this week, I found out that it does in fact, have something to do with Christianity. So in light of today, I wanted to know:
Should Christians celebrate Mardi Gras?
It seems like it has a Christian background, but the wider-known/spread rituals are ungodly. I personally still wouldn't celebrate it, at least in the way that most people do [in the West], but what are its main values and core ideas?
Is it something we should try to participate in, as another Christian holiday, or is it something we should stay far away from?
P.S. I genuinely curious. If you celebrate Mardi Gras, and aren't convicted about it***, by all means continue. :)
*** Obviously this conviction is scripture-based. Not merely the feeling of it, but what your conscience and the Holy Spirit warn you against.
